Before gospel singer Kirk Franklin could take the stage at Sundayâs âGospel on Independenceâ concert, the show was canceled due to severe weather.
The concert, scheduled for 7 p.m., at Independence Mall was initially postponed because of lightning and thunder detected in the area.
Wawa Welcome America officials, who organized the concert, said there were plans to restart the show, but it was ultimately canceled due to inclement weather.
Franklin, however, found a way to greet fans as he briefly stood on top of an SUV as the crowd exited Independence Mall.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Philadelphia kicked off a week of events celebrating the nation's 250th birthday Sunday evening with a gospel concert on Independence Mall, though rain brought the festivities to an early end before the headlining performance.
Thousands are expected to visit the city throughout the week for concerts, festivals and patriotic events leading up to the Fourth of July as America marks its semiquincentennial.
The celebration began with gospel music and remarks reflecting on the nation's history in the shadow of Independence Hall.
"Sometimes we just get together to have big crowds, but this is a crowd with meaning," said Renee Hughes of Philadelphia's Germantown neighborhood.

Kirk Franklin Held Back After Man Told Him That He and His Wife Are Going to Hell
Kirk Franklin had to be held back when a man wished ill on him and his wife, Tammy Collins.
Over the weekend, a man confronted the gospel music legend, and the pair engaged in a heated discussion, with Franklin trying to embrace him to de-escalate the tension. The man declined the hug and repeatedly told Franklin, “You need to repent.”
It wasn’t until the man told Kirk, “You and your wife are going to go to hell,” that Franklin became mad. At that point, security had to hold him back, and someone told the man to leave.
It seems that the argument happened after Franklin’s set at the Gospel on Independence concert at Philadelphia’s Independence Mall was canceled on Sunday due to a severe storm.
