At long last, we have achieved Maximum Muncy

WEST SACRAMENTO — Max Muncy was batting seventh and playing third base for the Athletics on Monday night. Meanwhile, on the other side of the diamond, Max Muncy was batting seventh and playing third base for the Dodgers.

No, that’s not a mistake. For the first time in the big leagues, we have reached Maximum Muncy.

It's the third time since 1901 that two players with the same name faced off against each other, playing the same position and hitting in the same spot in the lineup. The two previous occasions took place in the same series between the Blue Jays and the Marlins in June 2000, when Alex Gonzalez and Álex González both hit seventh and started at shortstop.

Athletics' Max Muncy: Handling full-time role

Muncy will start at third base and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the Angels.

He'll remain in the starting nine for an eighth straight game after going 5-for-23 (.217 average) with a home run, three walks, a stolen base, four RBI and two runs over the prior seven contests. Muncy looks like he'll have a fairly clear path to an everyday role at the hot corner while Zack Gelof (hand) is on the injured list.

Two Max Muncys for the Price of One as Dodgers Take on Athletics

WEST SACRAMENTO, CA — When the Dodgers open their series against the Athletics on Monday, scorekeepers may need to pay close attention. Major League Baseball currently has two third basemen named Max Muncy. One is a longtime Dodger with more than a decade in the big leagues. The other is a 23-year-old trying to build his own career with the Athletics.

Both players were born on August 25, exactly 12 years apart. The Dodgers’ Max Muncy was born in 1990, while the Athletics’ Max Muncy arrived in 2002. Both were drafted by the Athletics, both have played around the infield and both have spent much of their time at third base.
