Padres' Michael King Reacts to First Start After Missing 12 Weeks

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Michael King provided insight on his return to the mound on Saturday after missing nearly three months with a pinched nerve.

King pitched into the third inning in his appearance, though left after allowing a leadoff double to Alex Bregman, and allowed two runs and four hits through two full innings.

“Obviously, not as crisp as I’d like to be,” he said. “… I crossfired a few times, trying to go in, missed away or trying to go away, missed in. Changeup wasn’t as good as I’d like it to be. I felt like I found it a little bit in the second inning, but still not great. Slider was nowhere.

King returns to rotation; still in ramp-up mode

San Diego PadresNEWS: The Padres activated RHP Michael King from the 60-day IL and optioned RHP Sean Reynolds to Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding move.IMPACT: High BHQ SPIN: King last started a game for the Padres on May 18, missing the last almost three months with a thoracic nerve impingement in his right shoulder. He got the start against the Red Sox on Saturday, August 9 and lasted just 2.0 IP, giving up 2 ER on 4 H and 2 BB with 1 K. He was inefficient, throwing just 35 strikes in 57 pitches, which isn’t surprising given his long absence. As long as he comes out of the start with no shoulder issues, King (+1% PT) should slot back right into the Padres rotation and get his next start on Friday, August 15 in…

King eyes efficiency in his return start against Red Sox

SAN DIEGO — Padres right-hander Michael King is set to make his long-awaited return to the mound. He is scheduled to face the Red Sox on Saturday at Petco Park.

King has missed nearly three months due to a long thoracic nerve issue that affected the strength in his right shoulder. His return gives the Padres rotation a major boost ahead of the stretch run.

In 10 starts this season, King has posted a 2.59 ERA. He was the team’s Opening Day starter and its Game 1 starter in the postseason last year.

King made one rehab start for Triple-A El Paso in which he allowed six runs while striking out five over 3 1/3 innings. He threw 61 pitches, which means that he’ll assuredly be on a limited pitch count upon his return to the big league mound.
