Greene ready to come off IL, impact Reds' playoff push

CINCINNATI — The Reds played well enough without Hunter Greene to contend for the playoffs while the starting pitcher was on the injured list for more than two months with a strained right groin.

Could having Greene back in the rotation — beginning Wednesday vs. the Phillies — be the difference that helps put Cincinnati into the postseason with a National League Wild Card spot over the final six weeks?

“I’ll tell you after the last six weeks," manager Terry Francona said. "He pitched Opening Day for us, so we obviously thought pretty highly of him. Getting back a main member of your staff should help.”

Hunter Greene’s return to Reds rotation might push Chase Burns to the bullpen – The Athletic

CINCINNATI — With the return of Hunter Greene to the rotation, the Cincinnati Reds have six starters for five spots, which could move rookie Chase Burns to the bullpen.

Regardless of the role Burns is in, the Reds are hoping Burns is pitching for the team the rest of the season. Between the minors and majors this season, Burns has already surpassed the 100 innings he threw in his junior year at Wake Forest.

“We’re all in agreement that we do not want this kid stopping pitching,” Reds manager Terry Francona said before Monday’s 4-1 loss against the Philadelphia Phillies. “So, how do we get to the end? We might have to get a little creative.”

'I embrace it.' Pressure on for Hunter Greene to make playoff impact for Cincinnati Reds

When he returns to the mound after taking nearly all of the last 14 weeks recovering and rehabbing from a mild groin strain, Greene gets the chance down the stretch to make the kind of impact the Cincinnati Reds paid him to make ‒ if not make amends to teammates who have put the team in a playoff chase without him.

“I don’t know about amends,” Greene said on the eve of his Aug. 13 return to the mound against the National League East-leading Philadelphia Phillies.

“But obviously I have a lot of respect for everybody in that clubhouse,” he said. “Everybody works extremely hard, as well as I. There’s no difference in work ethic when it comes to myself or the rest of the team. Everybody works extremely hard, and has made a lot of sacrifices as well. So it’s not really making amends, but just really trying to come back and not miss that beat.”
