Netflix Teams With Sony Pictures for Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’ Global Theatrical Release

"Sometimes a film like this comes along and we can give the filmmaker a different canvas and fans a theatrical experience that complements its Netflix release," the company said on Tuesday.

Netflix on Tuesday shared further details on its global theatrical release plans for Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, unveiling that Sony Pictures Entertainment will handle international distribution for the global theatrical release.

“Netflix and Sony Pictures have a strong track record of partnership, including their landmark global pay-1 licensing deal under which SPE’s feature films stream on Netflix worldwide — an industry-first for pay-1 — following their full theatrical and home entertainment windows,” the streaming giant highlighted.

Netflix Officially Confirms the Fate of Greta Gerwig's Narnia Reboot

Netflix has spent years trying to find itself a massive fantasy franchise, and it's been a struggle. Let's be real, they've not found it easy. However, they thought they'd found the answer when Greta Gerwig popped into their office and asked them if they'd heard of C.S. Lewis. They responded in the affirmative and before you know it, there's a big movie being made. But Netflix has always been rather fussy about where their movies get released. And with Gerwig demanding theatrical release for the movie, that put Netflix into a position where they had to make a decision. Now, they've made their choice.

Daniel Craig's 'Narnia' Reboot Rewriting Netflix Rules With New Release Update

The Chronicles of Narnia films were potential contenders to the Harry Potter installments. Both launched in the early 2000s, and both were initially box office hits. However, things did not pan out as expected with the Narnia sequels, which suffered diminishing returns and behind-the-scenes studio conflicts. Only three out of seven Narnia novels were adapted — The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. That's why fans are excited that Greta Gerwig is adapting the first story in the series.

Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, which hits theaters on Feb. 12, 2027, also marks a shift in Netflix's theatrical release strategy. Now, per Deadline, the streamer announced on Tuesday that Sony Pictures will distribute the film internationally. That makes sense considering Netflix and Sony's long-standing Pay-1 licensing deal. Sony is the logical international distribution partner because its films move to Netflix following their theatrical runs. The Magician's Nephew is also Netflix's first wide and extended theatrical release, a significant departure from the platform's "streaming-only" premieres. The film debuts on Netflix on Apr. 2, 2027, 59 days after it hits theaters.
