‘The Furious’, ‘Stop! That! Train!’, ‘The Amazing Digital Circus’ Round Out Top 10; Classic Cold War Noir ‘The Third Man’ Rerelease – Specialty Box Office
Lionsgate’s martial arts action film The Furious and RuPaul-starring Stop! That! Train! debuted to nos. 8 and 9 at the domestic box office with the The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act from Fathom rounding out the top ten in week 2.
The Furious from Lionsgate kicked up $2.75 million on 1,251 screens — at 97% Certified Fresh with Rotten Tomatoes critics, 95% with audiences. The studio acquired most worldwide rights to The Furious — excluding China, where it opened at no. 1 this weekend — following a raucous premiere at TIFF Midnight Madness. Lionsgate said the title, directed by Kenji Tanigaki, will be profitable and called the release an example of its “commitment to serving audiences and exhibitors with a diverse slate of original theatrical films, and forging relationships with rising filmmakers who deliver a fresh and distinctive point of view.”
China Box Office: ‘The Furious’ Dethrones ‘Dear You’ as ‘Disclosure Day’ Opens Third
Edko Films’ action thriller “The Furious” claimed the number one spot at the China box office during the June 12–14 weekend, unseating a long-running local juggernaut with an RMB76.1 million ($11.2 million) frame, according to data from Artisan Gateway.
Having debuted on June 11, the film has amassed a cumulative total of $13.9 million. Directed by action veteran Kenji Tanigaki and produced by Bill Kong, the martial arts showcase stars Xie Miao as Wang Wei, an ordinary man who unleashes a relentless rampage against a powerful child trafficking syndicate after his daughter is kidnapped. Lacking help from corrupt local authorities, his only ally is Navin (Joe Taslim), a dogged journalist searching for his own missing wife.

Weekend Box Office: Holdover Hot Takes
The Furious (obviously a newbie) nabs an impressive $13.5 million in China.
Obsession might become one of the biggest R-rated horror movies ever.
Apologies, but before I get into the holdover news for the weekend, and there’s a lot, I neglected to note that The Furious topped the box office in China with a solid $13.5 million market debut. The Hong Kong actioner is essentially an international production, with a director from Japan, a key co-producer from China and various actors from, offhand, China, Indonesia, Thailand, and, oh, Orange County, California! YouTube isn’t just a place for youth-skewing horror flicks or youth-skewing dystopian, Kafka-esque, existentially terrifying animated web shows… which is also big with the kids. Anyway, I bring this up to note that we shouldn’t be looking at The Furious’s run in China as if it were the latest Chinese-specific super blockbuster. Although I guess they could have shoehorned Wu Jing (Raymond Burr-in-Godzilla-style) and named it, uh, The Furious Wolf Warrior: From the Book of Lake Changjin?
