Flash flooding causes road closures in Whiteville

WHITEVILLE, N.C. (WECT) – Heavy rain has caused several roads to flood, according to the Whiteville Police Department (WPD).

Thunderstorms were reported at 5:14 p.m. with heavy rain in Whiteville. Parts of East College Street near the intersection of McKenzie Street are impassable, according to WPD.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that 1.5-3 inches of rain has fallen, with an expected rainfall rate of one to two inches per hour.

The Whiteville Police Department asks residents to avoid the area as crews work to make sure drains are open.

Whiteville Emergency Services reports that some cars were stranded in the water.

Wilmington weather update: Flash flooding possible with more rain ahead

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue across the Wilmington area for the next several days, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Some flash flooding was reported across the region on Wednesday, Aug. 6. There is the potential for coastal flooding in the coming days, especially during high tides on Friday, Aug. 8 and Saturday, Aug. 9.

Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center continues to monitor potential tropical developments. A weak low pressure located several hundred miles off the US coast is producing minimal showers and thunderstorms. Chances of tropical formation remain low at 30% in the next seven days.

A tropical wave in the central Atlantic Ocean is also producing shower activity. "Environmental conditions are forecast to become more conducive for gradual development in a few days, and a tropical depression could form late this weekend or early next week while the system moves west-northwestward to northwestward," the hurricane center reported. Chances of formation are 10% in the next 48 hours and 60% in the next seven days.
