Don Mattingly’s Phillies miracle has created an unexpected conversation about his legacy
Philadelphia Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly has fittingly saved one of his greatest baseball achievements for last. A perennial All-Star first baseman in his playing career, Mattingly has won 19 of 27 since replacing Rob Thomson in April.
Seemingly destined for their first losing season since the 2020 COVID season, the Phillies have instead since clawed their way back above .500. Not only should Mattingly be considered an early frontrunner for Manager of the Year, but social media has understandably restarted the conversations regarding his Hall of Fame case.

Iâm not suggesting the Phillies would ever get to a point where theyâd be sellers in the traditional sense. Even if they did, Marsh probably wouldnât be a traditional trade candidate. As much as he has improved, and as hot as he can get for stretches, he isnât the kind of stretch-run impact bat that contenders covet in late July. Remember, he is 2-for-26 in his last two postseasons. So why are we even talking about this?

Should the Phillies move Trea Turner out of the leadoff spot?
It’s been a rough go of it so far this year
Trea Turner had his best year as a Phillie in 2025, winning the first batting title in franchise history since 1958 and posting his best season by WAR (5.4) in Philadelphia and second best in his career while finishing fifth in MVP voting.
2026 has been a different story however, as Turner was hitting .225 with a .619 OPS entering play on Monday. His strikeout rate is up dramatically, climbing all the way up to 22.1% from 16.7% last year. Turner has almost exclusively hit leadoff this season and because of his struggles, the Phillies rank 28th in OPS (.589) and on-base percentage (.272) while ranking 24th in average (.214) in production out of the leadoff spot. Turner has especially struggled in May, hitting a paltry .186 with a .496 OPS and 25% K rate.
