Despite a $500 million net worth, Shaq just finished his fourth degree. He warns graduates: 'Your character will take you further than your resume'

For members of the class of 2026, graduation comes with a nagging uncertainty: in an AI-powered economy, was four years—and thousands of dollars—for a degree really worth it? But if there’s one person still making the case for higher education, it’s Shaquille O’Neal.

The 54-year-old former NBA star has amassed an estimated net worth of roughly $500 million, yet he just earned his fourth college degree; This time, a master of arts in liberal arts from Louisiana State University (LSU).

And his advice to Gen Z is simple: learning doesn’t end with a diploma.

“Never stop learning,” O’Neal told graduates during the LSU commencement ceremony earlier this week. “I’m proud of you all today, but this is not the end of your journey. Make sure you continue to strive, continue to learn, continue to have fun.”

Shaquille O'Neal is heading back to Baton Rouge to teach a mentorship class at LSU

BATON ROUGE — One of LSU's most celebrated alumni is returning to campus, this time as a member of the academic team.

Shaquille O'Neal says he is close to joining the LSU faculty as a professor.

O'Neal made the announcement on Inside the NBA, which he co-hosts. When asked by his co-hosts what his scholarly area of focus would be, "A class on mentorship," O'Neal said.

Tuesday’s announcement came just days after he returned to Baton Rouge to receive his second master's degree.

O'Neal has also served as a primary mentor and celebrity judge for student entrepreneurs on The Grind, an online business pitch competition and startup incubator hosted by online education company Campus.

Shaq Used His Master's Degree Graduation to Jokingly Shade Charles Barkley

While accepting his master’s degree at Louisiana State University, the same college where he played basketball before starting his NBA career, Shaquille O’Neal took an opportunity to playfully troll his Inside the NBA co-host Charles Barkley.

The former LSU Tigers player was recently awarded his Master of Arts in Liberal Arts degree from the College of Human Sciences and Education, and when his name was announced to accept his degree, he was introduced with a different name: “Shaquille I Hate Charles Barkley O’Neal.” Clearly overjoyed they actually read his name out as such at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, Shaq had a huge smile on his face as he accepted his degree.
