Caitriona Balfe has found herself in hot water after describing the Lanarkshire town of Shotts as an "armpit". The Irish star was unimpressed when Outlander filming pitched up in the former mining community, around 20 miles to the east of Glasgow.
There are suggestions that local youths disrupted filming of one episode, which Balfe was directing, leading to her grim appraisal. It has earned the 46-year-old a rebuke from former local MSP Alex Neil, who offered to show her around the 'real Shotts'.
Shotts emerged out of several smaller villages which eventually became one. It grew in size and importance in the 1800s thanks to the industrial revolution, which brought both mining, driven by the discovery of coal, and ironworks to the area. The Shotts Iron Company was in operation for over 150 years from 1801, while its slogan was "Shotts lights the world" due to the gas lamps being made in the town.
