New surgeon general’s advisory raises alarm about screen time risks for kids and teens
Too much screen use among kids and teens â including endless social media scrolling, nonstop texting and hours of video games â can be harmful, and it has become a public health concern in the United States, according to a surgeon generalâs advisory released Wednesday.
Officials at the US Department of Health and Human Services collaborated on the new advisory, as there is no confirmed surgeon general within the Trump administration.
The advisory warns that exposure to screens often begins before a childâs first birthday and increases with age.
By adolescence, children may spend more time on screens than they spend sleeping or attending school, the report said.
A Vacant Surgeon General’s Office Issues a Warning About Screen Time
The post of surgeon general has remained empty since President Trump took office last year.
The surgeon general’s office on Wednesday issued a warning about the dangers of screen time for young people, linking excessive time online to worse sleep issues, anxiety, depression, alcohol use and other health harms.
The advisory calls on children and adolescents to “live real life” and go outside, and for parents to discuss boundaries around technology and to delay screen time for “as long as possible.” It highlighted social media platforms as a top concern, but also pointed to A.I. chatbots and gambling platforms as part of the “digital ecosystem” driving concerning levels of screen time. The report also recommends that schools ban phones during classes, and that doctors ask about screen use during annual checkups.

New surgeon general advisory suggests screentime limits for kids
The U.S. surgeon general’s office wants you to crack down on screen time for your kids, according to a newly-published advisory.
Released on Wednesday, May 20, even as President Donald Trump's nominee for surgeon general awaits confirmation, the "Harms of Screen Use" bulletin warns that children and teens are spending more time on their digital devices than sleeping or attending school.
The report emphasizes much of what is already known — and some that is still being studied — about the detriments of too much screen time on developing minds. Much like the American Academy of Pediatrics' guidelines, it lays out both the harms and similar recommendations for parents and caregivers looking to understand and mitigate their children's use of electronic devices.
