‘CBS Evening News’ Ratings Disaster: Tony Dokoupil Hits Rock Bottom
The latest evening news ratings are in, and it’s not looking good for CBS Evening News, which has now finished below 4 million viewers for the third week in a row.
According to AdWeek, citing national live+same-day big data plus program ratings from Nielsen, the Tony Dokoupil fronted broadcast averaged 3.771 million total viewers and 467,000 viewers in the Adults 25-54 demographic for the week of April 20. This was down 1 percent in total viewers and down 3 percent in the demo compared to the week prior.
The show was also down on the same period last year, when John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois helmed the program. CBS Evening News fell by 2 percent in total viewers and by 12 percent in the key demo. Dokoupil took over as anchor on January 5 after he was promoted from CBS Mornings by CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss.

For years, Tony Dokoupil was a run-of-the-mill morning talk show host who had yet to make an indelible impression on television audiences.

“I have to say, when I read the book, I imagine if I took your name out of it, took away the awards and the acclaim, took the cover off, the publishing house goes away, the content of that section would not be out of place in the backpack of an extremist,” Dokoupil accusingly declared during the ‘CBS Mornings’ conversation.

Nielsen ratings, obtained by Status, show that the week beginning April 20 was the lowest-rated stretch of viewership since Dokoupil was promoted to the evening news slot by CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss in January.
CBS Evening News is now averaging just 3.7 million viewers, with the 4-million mark previously considered a low enough level to set off alarm bells for the network. In the all-important 25â54 demographic prized by advertisers, the show averaged just 467,000 viewers.
Veteran television news executives have raised concerns about how bad things could get for CBS News and its once-prestigious Evening News broadcast, and are placing the blame on Weissâ leadership. âThis isnât what a turnaround looks like. This is what a train wreck looks like,â one executive told Status.
