'Law & Order: SVU' Stars Christopher Meloni & Mariska Hargitay Reunite Now That He's 'Freshly Unemployed'

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit stars Christopher Meloni and Mariska Hargitay reunited now that the actor behind Elliott Stabler is “freshly unemployed” after Law & Order: Organized Crime was canceled.

On Friday, April 24, Meloni took to Instagram with a photo of himself and Hargitay, who plays the iconic Olivia Benson. The update came after news broke of Organized Crime‘s cancellation after five seasons on April 16.

“What one does on a random Thursday when still in LA and freshly unemployed,” he captioned the update. “Dinner hang with pals @therealmariskahargitay.”

In the featured image, Meloni, 65, snapped a selfie while donning a blue checkered blazer with a lighter blue undershirt and sitting next to Hargitay at a restaurant. The actress, 62, opted for an all-black look during the outing. After two similar pictures of Hargitay and Meloni, the fourth and final photo in the carousel seemingly showed Hargitay taking a selfie with Rachel McAdams.

Though NBC’s pair of Law & Order series remain lawful and orderly in the broadcast realm, the franchise’s latest streaming push was cut short, as Law & Order: Organized Crime was canceled at Peacock. It was a blow to fans, but arguably a bigger blow to the cast and crew putting it together. At least Christopher Meloni was able to keep good company in the aftermath of the news, in the forms of Mariska Hargitay and Rachel McAdams.

Not that it’s completely unheard of for Meloni and Hargitay to be hanging out well beyond the sets of any and all procedural dramas; their off-screen friendship has gone a long way to keeping fans so interested in their characters Stabler and Benson sharing a lusty and romantic future together, despite all odds. (I mean, the actual crossover appearances haven’t hurt.) But this get-together comes at an awkward and bittersweet crossroads, so soon after he learned his latest run as the dutiful investigator was extinguished. Check it out below.

Mariska Hargitay Reacts to 'Law & Order: Organized Crime' Cancellation

Mariska Hargitay said she cried after seeing Christopher Meloni’s reaction to “Law & Order: Organized Crime” being cancelled.

“I saw it and burst out in tears, first of all,” Hargitay told Extra at NBCUniversal’s Emmy Luncheon in L.A on Wednesday. “I immediately burst out in tears because it has, just like [Meloni] said, and he was so beautiful and open — because it has been a great ride. And it has been so beautiful and intimate and such a huge part of his life and was life-changing for him.”

She went on to say that the show’s cancellation took her by surprise. “Chris is working and in demand and such a magnificent actor,” she said. “But it’s, in a way, closing a chapter. So when that happens, one needs to take inventory. It’s a real marker in your life.”
