MLB trade deadline rumors: Brewers add backup catcher; Tigers land starting pitcher as Twins start sale

The Major League Baseball trade deadline is 6 p.m. ET this coming Thursday, July 31, and the action is beginning to pick up. This past weekend we saw Josh Naylor go to the Mariners and Ryan McMahon go to the Yankees, among others. Here now are Monday's deadline rumblings. 

The Brewers are working on a deal to acquire Rays catcher Danny Jansen, ESPN reports. Jansen, 30, has slashed .204/.314/.389 (97 OPS+) with 11 home runs and 33 walks in 259 plate appearances this season. For his career, he owns an OPS+ of 99 across parts of eight MLB seasons. Jansen is owed the remainder of an $8.5 million salary for this season, and his contract includes a $12 million mutual option for 2026. The Brewers have William Contreras as their primary catcher, but Jansen figures to improve their depth at the position as they attempt to repeat as NL Central champions. 

Brewers, Rays Finalizing Danny Jansen Trade

5:20pm: Minor league infielder Jadher Areinamo is headed back to the Rays, reports Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. Tampa Bay is also paying down some of Jansen’s remaining $2.667MM in salary.

5:04pm: The two sides are in agreement on a trade, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Milwaukee is sending one prospect back to Tampa Bay in the deal. Just as interestingly, Topkin adds that the Rays are working on a deal to acquire another catcher.

5:01pm: The Brewers and Rays are in the final stages of negotiation on a trade sending catcher Danny Jansen from Tampa Bay to Milwaukee, reports ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Jansen is playing the season on a one-year, $8MM contract and is a free agent at season’s end.

The Milwaukee Brewers have made their first swing of trade-deadline season.

The Brewers are acquiring catcher Danny Jansen from the Tampa Bay Rays, as first reported by ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Infield prospect Jadher Areinamo, ranked as the Brewers' No. 21 prospect in the Journal Sentinel's midseason update, is going back to Tampa Bay. He's batting .297 with an .818 OPS this year for the Class High-A Wisconsin. Areinamo, 21, has been productive throughout his minor-league career as a .297 hitter, but is also behind a plethora of infield prospects, including Cooper Pratt, Jesús Made, Luis Peña and Josh Adamczewski in the Brewers system.
