Timberwolves are on the verge of making a rotation change that should leave fans baffled

All season, Bones Hyland played a huge role for the Minnesota Timberwolves. It was beyond nearly everyone’s expectations, as he re-signed on a minimum deal late in the offseason. The 25-year-old quickly leaped over Rob Dillingham in the rotation and helped a bench that often struggled to produce to begin the year outside of Naz Reid.

It took just one playoff game, though, for Chris Finch to show his undying affinity for Mike Conley, playing him more than Bones. This is despite Conley being out of the rotation much of the time after he was re-added to the club (other than the end of the season, when he played because of injuries to Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels).

Timberwolves are facing a tricky rotation dilemma

Running a 10-man rotation in the playoffs isn't sustainable for most teams. Like many coaches, Chris Finch typically runs an eight-man rotation in the playoffs, but in Game 1's loss to the Denver Nuggets, Finch opted to go 10 deep. In fairness, Bones Hyland and Kyle Anderson combined for just 12 minutes. Thus, it seems likely that at least one of them will be cut from the Minnesota Timberwolves' rotation soon enough.

Nevertheless, choosing who to play between Mike Conley, Hyland, and Anderson is a tough call. As it stands, the Wolves need both bench scoring and more playmaking. In Game 1, Hyland struggled in his limited minutes, but could provide the Wolves with the bench scoring that they need. At the same time, the Wolves' ball movement was putrid on Saturday, which increases the need to play Conley and/or Anderson.

Timberwolves' Bones Hyland: Omitted from injury report

Hyland (hip) isn't listed on the injury report for Saturday's Game 1 against the Nuggets.

Hyland missed Minnesota's last two regular-season games due to a right hip issue, but he's good to go for the start of the playoffs. The 25-year-old guard averaged 14.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.2 steals in 24.4 minutes per contest over five regular-season appearances in April. If Anthony Edwards (knee) is downgraded from questionable to out, Hyland could see a bump in playing time Saturday.
