Potential WrestleMania 42 Spoiler for Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton Emerges

Randy Orton may be heading into WrestleMania 42 in worse shape than anyone realized.

According to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Orton is currently dealing with physical issues that could impact the outcome of his WWE Championship match against Cody Rhodes — and could ultimately prevent WWE from putting the title on him even if that was the plan heading into the weekend.

The narrative around the match had seemed to point strongly in one direction. During the April 10 episode of SmackDown, Pat McAfee delivered a promo stating that if Orton failed to defeat Rhodes, he would walk away from WWE entirely. That kind of stipulation typically functions as a near-guarantee of the opposite result, leading most observers to conclude Orton was walking out of Las Vegas as champion. Meltzer acknowledged as much in his report.

Randy Orton is reportedly ‘hurting,’ so WWE might have to change WrestleMania plans again

It doesn’t make sense for Randy Orton to win at WrestleMania if he needs to take time off.

The main event of WrestleMania Saturday (Apr. 18) is WWE Champion Cody Rhodes defending his title against Randy Orton. The story of their match has been ruined by the recent addition of Pat McAfee. The former NFL punter says WWE business metrics are spiraling down the toilet, and Randy is the only one who can restore WWE back to its glory days of the Attitude Era (or something like that).

McAfee maintains that he will leave WWE forever if Orton doesn’t walk out of WrestleMania as the 15-time world champion and save the business. This stipulation seems to telegraph that WWE’s plan is for Orton to win, considering that TKO CEO Ari Emanuel apparently thinks he can turn McAfee into the next Sylvester Stallone.
