Sydney Sweeney Antagonizes Amber Heard In John Carpenter’s Forgotten Thriller

2010’s The Ward (or John Carpenter’s The Ward) is such a tough film to talk about because it’s a run-of-the-mill psychological horror flick. It’s not terrible, just incredibly derivative. Think 2003’s Identity meets 2005’s The Jacket, both of which cost around $30 million to produce, but with only $10 million to pull it off.

The Ward leans into its limitations well, and it’s a fun way to spend 89 minutes, but it’s also from the guy who brought us Dark Star, Halloween, The Thing, and They Live. In that context, it almost makes me glad Carpenter is now in his side-quest era, popping up on Gunship albums and narrating retrofuturistic dystopias over ripping synth lines.

Johnny Depp Goes Old and Gray as Scrooge in ‘Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol’ Comeback Role

The star, who has largely been outside of the spotlight since his heated divorce trial with Amber Heard, made an appearance during Paramount's presentation.

The star, who has largely been working outside of the mainstream Hollywood system in recent years, took the stage during Paramount’s CinemaCon presentation on Thursday to debut his new movie Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol.

Depp walked out to Alex Warren hit “Ordinary,” in his signature hat, sunglasses and scarves, receiving hearty applause from the room of theater owners and distributors as he thanked them for the support and told them he loved them.

He explained he has been obsessed with A Christmas Carol “since I was a little kid,” and when he was first approached his immediate thought was that no one could match what Reginald Owen has done in the original movie in the ’30s.

Johnny Depp's Scrooge Debuts in 'A Christmas Carol' CinemaCon Trailer

Johnny Depp is about to learn what Christmas is all about.

The former superstar, whose career was overshadowed by his legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard and off-screen antics, is returning to blockbuster filmmaking with “Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol.” Paramount debuted a first-look at the Yuletide release during its presentation to movie theater owners at CinemaCon on Thursday, with Depp taking the stage in Las Vegas.

Depp entered The Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace to wild applause and catcalls from the rafters. “It really has been an extraordinary privilege,” Depp said on stage, about being asked by director Ti West to take on the role, calling the tale of Scrooge one “I have been obsessed with since I was a little child.”
