UT to host Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas in unpublicized April event
The University of Texas will host the conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas on April 15 for a closed door talk at the Hogg Memorial Auditorium, an invitation on university stationary obtained by the American-Statesman confirms.
Thomas, the longest-tenured justice on the Supreme Court, is set to give a lecture to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence’s signing in the 1,007-seat venue.
The invitation was sent from UT President Jim Davis’s office, but it is not clear how the event came about.
President George H.W. Bush appointed Thomas to the bench in 1991. Thomas is known for his originalist principles, staunch conservative values and opposition to protections for abortion, LGBTQ+ rights and affirmative action.
