And at a mere $68.99, it’s a real bargain too … at least for people planning on attending enough Dodgers games to make the season-long free refills worth the cost. With fountain drinks running about $11.99 each this season, those babies pay for themselves in around six refills.
It’s definitely a better deal than on Opening Day, when the same Ohtani cups were being sold for $74.99. Photos posted on social media show concession stand signs stating that free refills were available only on the day of purchase. (Here’s hoping that no one attempted to make that investment pay for itself in refills all in one day.)

The limited edition Shohei Ohtani souvenir cup was made to look like a uniform from the reigning NL MVP, complete with a textured feel. It was listed for sale at concession stands for the Dodgers’ season opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday for $74.99, with “fountain soda refills day of purchase” included in that price. The price quickly sparked discussion on social media, and by Saturday’s game, the listed price for the cup was dropped to $68.99. Additionally, the refill policy was changed to a season-long proposition.

As if the Dodgers were trying to successfully distract me from working on the third of three planned essays I have for the revival of the “It’s Not My Money(ball)” series, word began circulating that the Dodgers had released a refillable Shohei Ohtani souvenir soda that was originally $75 before tax, and only good for the game it was purchased.
In hindsight, the controversy that arose both over the price and over the original marketing was entirely foreseeable. Had these facts remained constant, the Dodgers would have been spectacularly outrageous, gouging their fans for a few cents’ worth of water and soda syrup.
