Golden Knights hope Tortorella hire brings much-needed spark

LAS VEGAS — General manager Kelly McCrimmon said Golden Knights players had lost their spark, and that played into Sunday's surprising decision to fire coach Bruce Cassidy and try to inject life into whatever remains of Vegas' season.

John Tortorella replaces Cassidy for at least the rest of the remainder of this season and the playoffs. Tortorella met with the players Monday, and the organization hopes his presence will jump-start what players agreed was a needed energy boost.

The Golden Knights take a three-game skid into Monday night's home game against Vancouver, which begins a final eight-game stretch. Vegas, which lost six of its past seven games, is in third place in the Pacific Division and in playoff position despite the recent downturn that includes a 5-10-2 record since the Olympic break through Sunday's play.

Can a late-season coaching change fix the Golden Knights? The 2000 Devils are Exhibit A

Bruce Cassidy, coincidentally, replaced Peter DeBoer behind the Vegas Golden Knights’ bench four years ago. Now they are two of the top names available to any team considering a coaching change this offseason.

The surprise wasn’t that the Golden Knights made a change, though. A lot of people had started to wonder if they would. Cassidy had been there for four years, and the team had been struggling. I speculated about the possibility last week.

Still, it was a surprise that it happened now, so late in the regular season. I thought it would be an offseason move if Vegas bowed out early in the Stanley Cup playoffs, but by making this move now, an always unafraid Golden Knights front office is indicating it wasn’t sure the playoffs were a given. The season needed saving.
