Fans of North Carolina might get their wish as coach Hubert Davis is not expected to return with the team following their first-round exit in the NCAA Tournament.
The hiring of Davis in 2021 raised eyebrows because of his lack of experience aside from being former coach Roy Williams’ assistant. He has constantly received criticism despite leading the Tar Heels to the national title game in his first season. The clamor to fire Davis grew after UNC lost to VCU in the opening round on Thursday.

Hubert Davis’ future in Chapel Hill is up in the air after North Carolina‘s season ended in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Despite still being the UNC head coach, however, many have already begun naming who his successor will be.
This includes ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, who is calling for one of his colleagues to take over as Tar Heels head coach moving forward. He believes North Carolina great and current Inside the NBA analyst Kenny Smith would be a great choice to lead UNC into the future.
“If Kenny Smith wants to do it, he should be the next head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels,” Stephen A. Smith said. “That’s right, I said it. This is a man that starred at North Carolina. This is a man that played with (Michael) Jordan, that boogied on Mark Price and those boys. Kenny ‘The Jet’ Smith is a brilliant basketball mind, but I got news for you. I think he’d be an even better recruiter.”

North Carolina has yet to formally move on from head coach Hubert Davis, though it seems like it's only a matter of time.
Davis has yet to reach the heights of his debut season in Chapel Hill, when he led the Tar Heels to the National Championship Game. They've only made it past the opening round of the NCAA Tournament one time since then, and have gotten bounced in the first round in back-to-back seasons, including a stunning collapse to 11-seeded VCU this season.
If the job opens, you can bet that Duke fans will be monitoring the coaching search closely. The Tar Heels could lure one of the top sitting head coaches with their brand and basketball commitment. But they could also make a laughable mistake again, especially if they aren't willing to look outside the "UNC family" as some believe.
