The Los Angeles Chargers plan to release guard Mekhi Becton in a move that will save them $9.7 million against the salary cap, a source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
Becton struggled last season after joining the Chargers on a two-year, $20 million deal last March. The six-year veteran battled injuries throughout the season and voiced his frustration with the Chargers at one point last November.
Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz had to decide quickly on Becton, who was due a $2.5 million roster bonus on March 13 and another $1 million bonus on March 15.
Report: Chargers plan to release Mekhi Becton
The Chargers made an early splash in free agency last year when they signed guard Mekhi Becton, but Becton is reportedly heading back to the open market this March.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports that the Chargers plan to release the veteran lineman in the coming days.
Becton signed a two-year deal with the Chargers last March, but the deal did not include any guaranteed money for the 2026 season. The Chargers would clear $9.7 million in cap room by cutting him and they’d be left with $2.5 million in dead money.
Becton appeared in 15 regular season games at right guard for the Chargers and he also started their playoff loss to the Patriots. The 2020 Jets first-round pick struggled with injuries early in his career, but won a starting job with the Eagles in 2024 and his work helping them to a Super Bowl win set him up for his deal with the Chargers.

The Chargers are reportedly releasing Super Bowl winner Mekhi Becton less than a year after he signed a $20million deal with Los Angeles.
The veteran guard – nicknamed 'Big Ticket' – moved to the Chargers after helping the Philadelphia Eagles win Super Bowl LIX last February.
But now, according to ESPN, Becton – who started 14 games for the Chargers last season – is being released.
The move will reportedly save Los Angeles $9.7million in salary cap space, which can now be used on reinforcements for the 2026 season.
Becton, who is 6ft 7ins and weighs 363lbs, was drafted 11th overall by the New York Jets back in 2020 after playing college football for Louisville.
