Union's Cavan Sullivan, 16, makes U.S. history with 1st goals

Hailed as the MLS' teen soccer sensation, 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan delivered an American scoring record with his first professional goals for the Philadelphia Union.

Sullivan broke through with the game of his young — very, very young — career when he scored twice and had two assists to lead the Union to a 7-0 win over Defense Force FC on Thursday night in the Concacaf Champions Cup — the North American equivalent of the UEFA Champions League.

"It's another moment in the right direction," Union coach Bradley Carnell said.

Sullivan became the youngest American goal scorer in a Concacaf Champions Cup game at 16 years, 4 months, 29 days.

Match Report: Philadelphia Union 7 – 0 Defence Force

The Philadelphia Union delivered a commanding performance at Subaru Park on Thursday night, overwhelming Trinidad & Tobago’s Defence Force FC 7–0 in the second leg of their Concacaf Champions Cup Round One tie to advance with a 12–0 aggregate victory.

It was a night to remember for the home side, highlighted by a historic performance from 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan, who starred with four goal contributions, including his first professional goals and a brace in front of the home crowd.

Head Coach Bradley Carnell made five changes from the first leg, blending a bit of experience with exciting young talent: Andrew Rick started in goal again, and the defense from left to right was Giovanny Sequera, Olwethu Makhanya, Geiner Martinez, and Olivier Mbaizo. The midfield consisted of Alejandro Bedoya, Jovan Lukic, Jeremy Rafanello, and Sullivan. Ezekiel Alladoh and Stas Korzeniowski started as the striking tandem.

Historic night for Cavan Sullivan, who scores twice in the Union’s Champions Cup rout of Defence Force

His two goals, coupled with two assists, saw Sullivan, 16, become the youngest goalscorer in the history of the Concacaf Champions Cup. Next up for the Union, rivals NYCFC visit Subaru Park on Sunday

Cavan Sullivan scored twice for the Union in the team’s 7-0 rout of Defence Force F.C. at Subaru Park on Thursday night, netting his first in the 76th minute and a second in the 88th.

Despite being the club’s most talked about prospect, Sullivan, the team’s 16-year old midfielder who will join Manchester City at the end of 2027, had been scoreless for the Union in 19 appearances leading up to Thursday night’s match.
