Joey Aguilar’s pursuit of another year of college football took a significant hit Friday, when a Tennessee judge refused to grant the Volunteers quarterback’s request for a preliminary injunction that would have prevented the NCAA from deeming him ineligible while his lawsuit moves through the courts.

Knox County Chancellor Christopher Heagerty, who had already granted Aguilar a temporary restraining order, handed down the decision on the injunction seven days after presiding over a hearing in Knoxville, Tenn., home of the Volunteers. Aguilar can appeal the ruling, but injunction decisions are typically difficult to get overturned.

Tennessee QB Joey Aguilar reportedly ineligible to play 2026 season after judge denies preliminary injuction

While Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar received a temporary restraining order earlier this month that opened the door to him playing for the Volunteers next season, the 24-year-old won't be eligible for the 2026 campaign, after all.

A Knoxville judge denied Aguilar's preliminary injunction for another year of eligibility, according to multiple reports on Friday.

Aguilar’s case was centered more around Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia’s lawsuit against the NCAA than Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss’. Aguilar began his college career in 2019 at a community college before he transferred to Appalachian State four years later.

Aguilar redshirted in his first season of junior college football in 2019 before the 2020 season was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He transferred and played two more seasons at a community college before joining App State ahead of the 2023 season.

Joey Aguilar reportedly denied 2026 eligibility, what's next for Tennessee at quarterback

Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar was denied a preliminary injunction in his eligibility lawsuit against the NCAA by a Knoxville judge, per multiple reports. That denial figures to be a decisive blow to his efforts at playing for the Volunteers in 2026, and serves as a big win for the NCAA which has been on the wrong side of a number of eligibility cases recently.

Aguilar hoped to follow in the footsteps of Ole Miss star quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, who received his own temporary injunction from a Mississippi-based chancery court earlier in February. However, Aguilar's case is different than Chambliss', who argued successfully he should gain another year of eligibility due to a health condition he dealt with in 2022.
