For US pairs skaters Emily Chan and Spencer Akira Howe, the experience is a singular sensation
MILAN — She wasn’t supposed to be here after all, so it was no surprise Emily Chan seemed to breathe a sigh of relief as the music wound down at Milano Ice Skating Arena.
Chan and her pairs figure skating partner, Spencer Akira Howe, were named to the 2026 Winter Olympic team after two pairs who finished ahead of them at the US championships could not qualify because of citizenship issues.
Representing the Skating Club of Boston, Chan and Howe put up a strong showing Sunday, finishing ninth in the short program.
“It was a bit of a sigh of relief,†Chan said, “and just excitement. Like, ‘We did it.’ We really went out there and we were together, and we experienced that whole entire program together. And I just felt on the top of the mountain.â€
A shift in US figure skating? Pairs ‘only getting better’
MILAN — For most of the 21st century, U.S. pairs figure skating has been an afterthought.
While the men, women and ice dance sent three representatives in their respective disciplines, it became the norm to just send two pairs. Even then, they weren’t really medal favorites. It was never something Team USA boasted.
While not quiet podium contenders, the teams of Ellie Kam and Danny O’Shea with Emily Chan and Spencer Akira Howe showed the American pairs division is on the rise, starting the short program on a strong note to set up what could be a milestone finish.
