Cake Founding Guitarist Greg Brown Has Died
Greg Brown, the founding guitarist for Cake, has died. The band's social media account announced the news today, saying he passed "after a brief illness."
"It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Greg Brown’s passing after a brief illness," Cake posted. "Greg was an integral part of CAKE’s early sound and development. His creative contributions were immense, and his presence—both musical and personal—will be deeply missed. Godspeed, Greg."
Greg Brown founded the droll rock band in 1991 with singer John McCrea, trumpeter Vince DiFiore, drummer Frank French, and bassist Shon Meckfessel. Brown played on some of Cake's most important records, like 1994's Motorcade Of Generosity and 1996's Fashion Nugget before departing the group in 1998.

Brown is credited with playing on Cake’s albums “Motorcade of Generosity” and “Fashion Nugget.” He left the band in 1998 and joined the band Deathray and also played in Homie along with Rivers Cuomo.

Brown was part of the original lineup of Cake, which was founded in 1991 by frontman John McCrea. He played on Cake's 1994 debut album, Motorcade of Generosity, and their breakthrough 1996 sophomore effort, Fashion Nugget, which spawned the Brown-written hit "The Distance."
