Sources: Bulls trade Nikola Vucevic to Celtics for Anfernee Simons

The Boston Celtics have acquired center Nikola Vucevic in a trade with the Chicago Bulls, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania, adding some much-needed help to their frontcourt.

Boston will trade guard Anfernee Simons and a second-round draft pick to Chicago, sources told Charania.

The 6-foot-9 Vucevic figures to fill a major need at center for the Celtics, who have primarily used unproven youngsters Neemias Queta and Luka Garza at center this season.

The Celtics (31-18), led by their star backcourt trio of Jaylen Brown, Derrick White and Payton Pritchard, entered Tuesday tied with the New York Knicks for the second-best record in the Eastern Conference.

The Chicago Bulls made their second trade of the day on Tuesday, reportedly sending one of their most productive players to the Celtics.

According to ESPN, the Bulls have traded center Nikola Vucevic to the Boston Celtics.

In return, the Bulls are getting a guard who's played at a high level for a Boston team in transition. The Celtics have Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, but Tatum is recovering from a torn Achilles he suffered in the playoffs last season.

The Boston Celtics are acquiring center Nikola Vučević from the Chicago Bulls in exchange for guard Anfernee Simons, a league source confirmed to The Athletic. The two teams will also trade future second-round picks to each other as part of the deal.

In acquiring Vučević, the Celtics also get closer to getting out of the luxury tax. Both players are on expiring contracts, with Simons making $27.7 million and Vučević making $21.5 million.

Simons, 26, averaged 14.2 points per game during his brief Celtics tenure. His sharpshooting and playmaking helped turn the Boston bench into a surprising strength. Several times, Coach Joe Mazzulla raved about Simons’ mindset as he accepted his new role and contributed to the team’s winning efforts. But while Neemias Queta and Luka Garza have been pleasant surprises in the frontcourt, the Celtics had more need for a big man like Vučević than another guard like Simons.
