The Cleveland Cavaliers have been able to find a groove once again at the end of January, currently riding a five-game win streak heading into a matchup against the Phoenix Suns on Friday.
Despite injuries to some of Cleveland's top players, franchise star Donovan Mitchell has been the most reliable player for the Cavs, averaging 32.6 points per game during the five-game stretch.
It seems that Mitchell has always been the guy to lean on for Cleveland since joining the team in 2022, and this could be the reason behind the 29-year-old's upcoming decision this offseason.
Donovan Mitchell May Opt Out Of Contract Faster Than Expected
The Cleveland Cavaliers are hoping to rebound from their disappointing start to the season in hopes of contending for an NBA Championship by the postseason. Donovan Mitchell is arguably having the best season of his career and should receive an All-NBA selection at the end of the season. However, injuries to Darius Garland and Evan Mobley, among others, have caused the Cavaliers to have a disappointing season so far.
ESPN insider Brian Windhorst revealed that Mitchell may be exploring his future sooner than most expected after the 2026-2027 season:
“[He’s] probably opting out. Is it to re-sign in Cleveland, or is it to go somewhere else? Or do the Cavs feel some pressure? That’s to be determined.”

The second apron of the salary cap makes it a lot harder to pull anything off before the upcoming trade deadline. But the Cavs also seem to want to do something, because they're in a clear competitive window that they need to maximize.
The reason, explained by ESPN's Brian Windhorst and Tim Bontemps, is that there's a looming Donovan Mitchell flashpoint on the horizon.
"With just one guaranteed year remaining on Mitchell's contract, the franchise is headed toward a perilous gut check moment," the ESPN duo writes. "Mitchell hasn't hinted at anything but contentment in Cleveland, and he has already signed one extension. Would that change after another first- or second-round exit? Mitchell has never reached a conference finals in his eight-plus seasons. That is why sources around the league are closely monitoring Cleveland over the next week and into the offseason."
