Haley Lu Richardson felt a spark with 'Ponies': 'Oh, my God, this is me'

Twice in her career Haley Lu Richardson has read a script and immediately known, “I have to do this.” The first time was Kogonada’s 2017 indie “Columbus,” a poignant film that put Richardson on the map as an actor. The second was “Ponies,” Richardson’s new Peacock series, now streaming, in which she plays Twila, a CIA spy in Cold War Russia, alongside Emilia Clarke.

“I often read scripts and there’s this soul-crushing thing that happens where you get 10 pages in and it doesn’t spark anything in you, no connection or inspiration,” says Richardson, 30, speaking over Zoom from her home in Phoenix in December. Last year was particularly busy for her, shooting “Ponies” and two films, and she’s still learning how to be back in her everyday life without the constant stimulation of a set.

Breaking Down the Shocking Ending of 'Ponies'

PONIES, the new Peacock series created by Susanna Fogel and David Iserson, has an enticing premise. In 1977, Bea (Emilia Clarke) and Twila (Haley Lu Richardson) live in Moscow, working at the US Embassy while their husbands work as CIA operatives. But when both of their husbands die together under mysterious circumstances, their lives are turned upside down. To get answers on what really happened to their husbands, the two former PONIES (“persons of no interest” in intelligence speak) become CIA spies.

Though PONIES is largely a work of fiction, there are elements of real events infused into the story. That includes an Elton John concert (though in real life, it happened in 1979, two years after the events of the show) and a major incident inside the US Embassy. It’s a story that isn’t true, but it’s not so far detached from reality that it never could have happened. It just didn’t.

Emilia Clarke’s New Spy Series Just Arrived on Peacock

Nearly seven years after she last appeared on screen as Daenerys Targaryen, Emilia Clarke has traded in Westeros for Moscow for her new spy thriller now on Peacock. All eight episodes of the anticipated show just arrived on the NBCUniversal streamer, notching Clarke her latest post-Game of Thrones credit after appearances in projects like the animated film The Amazing Maurice, the Marvel series Secret Invasion, and Netflix’s The Twits.

That show is Ponies, a new Cold War spy thriller created by Susanna Fogel and David Iserson. The series is set in 1977 and stars Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson as two PONIES, or “persons of no interest,” who work anonymously as secretaries at the American Embassy in Moscow. When their husbands die under mysterious circumstances in the Soviet Union, they are thrust into the CIA and must dig into the vast conspiracy their husbands were killed for. Ponies Season 1 consists of eight episodes, scheduled to release on Peacock on January 15th.
