Mikel Arteta has issued an update on the fitness of key first-team players ahead of our first game of 2026 against Bournemouth on Saturday.
Declan Rice missed our 4-1 victory over Aston Villa on Tuesday with knee inflammation, but having not seen him train since Tuesday, the boss is waiting to see how Friday goes before making a decision on the England midfielder.
“We have another session today, let’s see how he comes today and how that’s feeling, but [the Villa game] was too early for him,” the boss said at the Sobha Realty Training Centre.
Mikel Arteta uncertain whether Declan Rice will be available for Bournemouth game
Mikel Arteta is unsure whether Declan Rice is ready to return to action for Arsenal this weekend against Bournemouth, but has ruled out Cristhian Mosquera and Riccardo Calafiori.
Rice missed Arsenal’s 4-1 win over Aston Villa with a knee injury, which the Arsenal manager said needed a reduction in swelling for the midfielder to have a chance of playing.
Asked whether Rice’s swelling had reduced before his pre-Bournemouth press conference on Friday, he said: “Not yet. We have another session today. Let’s see how he comes through and how that’s feeling, but that game (against Aston Villa) was too early for him.”

Mikel Arteta gives Declan Rice injury update for Arsenal
Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Declan Rice remains a doubt for Arsenal’s clash with Bournemouth this weekend.
Rice missed the midweek win over Aston Villa after sustaining a knee issue against Brighton on December 17th. The England international is due to train on Friday, though Arteta admitted the swelling around his knee has not gone down.
“Not yet. We have another session today. Let’s see how he comes through today and how he’s feeling, but it was too early that game for him,” Arteta said at his pre-match press conference.
Rice played the full 90 minutes against Brighton, despite picking up the knock on the hour. Asked if he had any regrets about that decision, Arteta added: “No, no, no – he managed to do it [complete the game]. That’s normal. Sometimes you get a hit and throughout the game you are able with adrenaline and because you are warm you are able to sustain that.
