New Year’s Eve shoppers prioritize food over fireworks in Hawaii
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Last-minute New Year’s Eve shoppers prioritized food, drinks, and supplies over fireworks Wednesday, with many saying they’re keeping celebrations simple and safe.
“Compared to last year, it’s really, really quiet, you know, last year was, you wouldn’t know when you started or ended,” said Tad Yamakawa, general manager of Tanioka’s.
Makakilo resident Marilyn Quemada agreed and said, “Last year was very active, and then compared to this year, it’s been slow.”
“I’m not popping fireworks this year, so yeah, I hope everybody is safe out there,” said one resident.
Officials said illegal fireworks can be reported anonymously to the state Department of Law Enforcement or by calling 911.
