Zoe Saldaña sparks backlash for claiming her ‘Avatar’ character is ‘racist’

Zoe Saldaña made a bold statement about her “Avatar” character, Neytiri.

“Let’s face it, Neytiri’s a racist,” the actress, 47, said in a recent interview with CinemaBlend while promoting “Avatar: Fire and Ash.”

“And she just… and she loses sight because of this blind fury that she has,” Saldaña continued.

When Zoe Saldaña first stepped into the role of Avatar’s Neytiri, she was in her 20s. Now 47, the actor is back with the third film in James Cameron’s epic franchise, Avatar: Fire and Ash, out December 19.

“This installment of Avatar [is about] how a family can be resilient and learn to smile and love again after experiencing great loss,” Saldaña tells Vogue’s deputy editor, Taylor Antrim, and global director of social, Sam Sussman, on this Thursday’s episode of The Run-Through.

It has been, to put it mildly, an exciting year for Saldaña. In March, she won the Oscar for her performance in Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez; she’s currently working on Season 3 of Lioness; she’s Vogue Mexico and Latin America’s December 2025 cover star; and she recently met Pope Leo while in Italy with her three sons. “They were so hyper,” Saldaña says. “They’re like typical 10- and eight-year-olds and can’t focus… And the moment comes and we’re right in front of him, [and] they’re gleaming.”

I’ve Never Been Happier To Be Wrong About Neytiri In Avatar: Fire & Ash

I'm very happy Avatar: Fire & Ash proved me wrong about Neytiri. Played by Zoe Saldaña, 2023's The Way of Water left Neytiri in a very dark place. However, one twist in Fire & Ash perfectly debunked one of my biggest theories about the Sully Family matriarch.

Going into Avatar: Fire & Ash, I was expecting Neytiri to cross some major lines that would massively fracture the fortress that is the Sully Family. Instead, the film delivers a very emotionally satisfying reversal for Neytiri, defying those expectations in the best way possible.

The ending of Avatar: The Way of Water clearly put Spider at odds with Neytiri following the death of her and Jake's oldest son, Netayam, who'd been trying to save the human son of Miles Quaritch.
