Japan Airlines takes over as global title sponsor for Honolulu Marathon

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Honolulu Marathon is days away, and although there’s a new global title sponsor, the company has supported the race for decades.

Japan Airlines (JAL) is taking over as the global title sponsor, but its partnership with the marathon began 42 years ago.

“They’ve been with us since the 80s,” said Dr. Jim Barahal, Honolulu Marathon president. “It’s been (an) amazing relationship. It’s definitely the longest-running corporate event combination partnership anywhere in the world.”

“The beautiful thing about it is this year, for the first time, Japan Airlines will be the title sponsor, so we’ll be called the JAL Honolulu Marathon,” Barahal added. “We’re very excited about that.”

“It’s our first marathon ever, so yeah, very exciting,” said Calum Watson, who is running with friend Robbie Tooth. Both are visiting from Sydney, Australia.

“We’re raising a bit of money for Beyond Blue. It’s a mental health charity in Australia,” Tooth said. “We’re trying to spread the message of starting the chat about mental health and just making it normal so people can speak up about how they feel.”
