USGS quickly deletes 5.9 magnitude earthquake alert near Dayton
NEVADA (KRNV) â Residents in northern Nevada were left puzzled this morning after receiving an alert from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) about a magnitude 5.9 earthquake that never happened.
The alert, sent at 8:06 a.m., prompted many to check with neighbors, but no one reported feeling any tremors. Local stations confirmed that no viewers reported shaking, and social media was devoid of firsthand accounts. The alert was subsequently removed by the USGS without explanation.
Prof. Christie Rowe, director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory, confirmed that the earthquake did not happen. She explained that the alert originated from the USGS ShakeAlert system, which relies on seismic stations in California.
