First college basketball NET rankings released by NCAA: Michigan lands at No. 1 ahead of Duke in key metric

The first official release of the 2025-26 men's college basketball NET rankings, a ranking system utilized as a sorting tool for NCAA Tournament selection committee that factors in winning percentage, game results, strength of schedule, game location, wins and losses quality and team efficiency, debuted Monday with Michigan at No. 1 and Duke at No. 2. The release was good news in particular for the Big Ten, which had six teams inside the top-20 — including Purdue at No. 3 and Michigan State at No. 10.

The NET replaced the RPI as an official selection committee criteria prior to the 2018-19 season. It is a results and predictive-based metric.

First NCAA NET ranking is out and it’s not good news for Syracuse

Syracuse – The NCAA released its first NET rankings for the 2025-26 season and the news was not good for Syracuse.

The NET is the NCAA’s tool to sort its teams by various criteria and thereby assign a value to every game based on the teams’ NET ranking. Those NET rankings in March help determine the NCAA Tournament field.

Syracuse, at No. 90, will play Tennessee, No. 12, Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the JMA Wireless Dome.

Right now, that’s a Quad 1 game for SU and a Quad 2 game for the Volunteers.

Syracuse started last season ranked No. 177 in the NET and ended last season ranked No. 133. The Orange went 14-19 last year. SU was 4-2 when the first NET rankings were released last season.
