Panthers' once-promising golden ticket already looks like a disaster

The Carolina Panthers' youth movement has brought some impressive improvements in Year 2 under head coach Dave Canales. But if their Monday Night Football loss to the San Francisco 49ers taught them anything, it's that this squad — as presently constructed — is not ready to leap into contention just yet.

They remain too inconsistent for any other assumption. Head coach Dave Canales is still learning on the job, dealing with some harsh truths along the way. Carolina's long-term future looks promising, even though challenging this season might be a step too far when push comes to shove.

And there is a once-promising golden ticket that is not making the desired progress.

NFC South standings

The Los Angeles Rams trounced the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 34-7 on “Sunday Night Football” as Baker Mayfield left the game due to a left shoulder injury. Mayfield aggravated the injury on the last play of the first half and did not return. He was spotted on the sideline wearing a sling late in the contest.

Matthew Stafford went 25-of-35 passing for 273 yards with three touchdowns, two of which went to Davante Adams. Teddy Bridgewater, who replaced Mayfield, went 8-of-15 passing for 62 yards.

The Rams improve to 9-2 while the Buccaneers fall to 6-5.

NFL analyst states the painful truth about the 2025 Carolina Panthers

Perspective can be tough to come by when you're an NFL fan whose team hasn't made the playoffs in seven years. That said, Carolina Panthers fans do have to recognize that they're much better now than they were at this time last year.

If you're looking for someone to credit, look no further than general manager Dan Morgan – who put together one of the best offseasons in the NFL in 2025.

Thanks to a very strong draft class, this roster has a good foundation to build on for the first time since the 2017 draft.

However, when you're as far behind the competition as the Panthers were going into 2025 – it's going to take more than just one good offseason to catch up. The hard truth is that this team is not a contender yet, per Brad Gagnon at Bleacher Report.
