A minor, 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck in Northern California on Wednesday, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The temblor happened at 6:16 a.m. Pacific time about 5 miles east of Gilroy, Calif., data from the agency shows. Several aftershocks, including a magnitude 3.6 quake nearby, followed a few minutes later.

U.S.G.S. data earlier reported that the magnitude of the initial earthquake was 4.2.

As seismologists review available data, they may revise the earthquake’s reported magnitude. Additional information collected about the earthquake may also prompt U.S.G.S. scientists to update the shake-severity map.
