A 73-year-old woman was among the 50 or so people injured in their apartments in the early hours of 14 November in yet another Russian missile and drone attack on the city. She later became its fatality, having suffered burns to 45% of her body and to her respiratory tract.

Natalia Khodemchuk, the widow of the first victim of the 1986 nuclear disaster, died from the impact of a Shahed strike on her apartment building in Kyiv
Valery Khodemchuk literally vanished on April 26, 1986, when reactor 4 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded. Valery was in the reactor’s water circulation pump room. His body was never found, but he was recorded as the first fatality of the worst nuclear disaster in history. Nearly four decades later, his widow, Natalia Khodemchuk, died last Saturday at the age of 73 in a Kyiv hospital: the night before, a Russian drone strike had hit her apartment while she slept.

The recent drone and missile strike targeting Kyiv has resulted in a tragic loss for the legacy of the Chornobyl disaster, with Nataliia Khodemchuk, the widow of the first Soviet engineer killed during the 1986 explosion, succumbing to injuries sustained in the attack. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned her death as a “new tragedy caused by the Kremlin,” a somber reflection on the enduring impact of the Chornobyl disaster nearly four decades ago.
Nataliia’s husband, Valerii Khodemchuk, was a circulating pump operator at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant and perished when reactor number four exploded. His remains were never recovered, leaving a haunting chapter in the history of one of the worst nuclear disasters. Following the incident, Nataliia and her children evacuated from Pripyat, receiving a new apartment on Kyiv’s left bank, which became known as the “Chornobyl house.”
