Bristol City see off Swansea to return to top six

Bristol City captain Rob Dickie's goal was his first of the season

Bristol City returned to the Championship play-off places with a convincing home win over Swansea City, who had prospective new head coach Vitor Matos watching from the stands.

The struggling Swans are close to appointing the Portuguese as Alan Sheehan's successor, but Matos had not even taken his seat at Ashton Gate by the time the hosts had taken a fourth-minute lead through Rob Dickie's header from an Anis Mehmeti corner.

Although Swansea had chances to equalise, they were passive and defensively sloppy as they fell further behind after half an hour, with Emil Riis volleying in from Mehmeti's deep cross.

An increasingly competitive second tier in English football remains an intense and exciting competition, with the prize of a place in the Premier League on offer at the end of the season.

Relegation from the top flight last term means Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton are all back in the second tier this term and will be expected to push for play-off spots again at least, but so too will newly-promoted Birmingham City and Wrexham, with a host of hopefuls eyeing up the ÂŁ200m jackpot that comes with promotion to the top flight. At the other end of the table, Sheffield Wednesday and Hull City hope to stay up amid crises.

Gerhard Struber makes request of Bristol City fans as Reds look to bring 'fire' to Swansea clash

Gerhard Struber has called on Bristol City supporters to bring "the biggest noise" that they can to Ashton Gate for the Robins' clash with Swansea City, with the Austrian promising his side will "start with fire" when they return to Championship action this weekend.

The Reds kick off a run of 11 matches in the lead-up to and over the festive period with an Anglo-Welsh clash against the managerless Swans on Saturday lunchtime. The South Wales club opted to part ways with head coach Alan Sheehan early in the November international break after a disappointing start to the season.

With 15 games played in England's second tier, Swansea sit 18th in the Championship table, seven points clear of Sheffield United and the relegation zone but eight adrift of the play-off places. They will travel to BS3 with the aim of securing a first win in five games, in all competitions, under the guidance of interim boss Darren O'Dea.
