Giants bolster outfield depth, snag Wiemer from Marlins
The Giants bolstered their outfield depth on Friday, trading for Joey Wiemer in a deal with the Marlins.
San Francisco sent cash considerations to Miami in return, then designated catcher Andrew Knizner for assignment to clear space for Wiemer on their 40-man roster.
In 27 games with the Marlins last season, Wiemer batted .236 with a .715 OPS. He was designated for assignment earlier in the week, as the Marlins shuffled their 40-man roster ahead of Tuesdayâs deadline to protect eligible prospects from the Rule 5 Draft.

Giants acquire outfielder Joey Wiemer in trade with Marlins, DFA Andrew Knizner
SAN FRANCISCO â The major offseason deals wonât happen until closer to Decemberâs Winter Meetings, but the Giants made another minor move Friday.Â
Outfielder Joey Wiemer was acquired from the Miami Marlins in exchange for cash considerations, with catcher Andrew Knizner getting designated for assignment to clear a roster spot. Wiemer, 26, had been DFAâd by the Marlins earlier this week.Â
A fourth-round pick in 2020, Wiemer reached the big leagues with Milwaukee in 2023 and had a solid rookie year, hitting 13 homers but posting a wRC+ of 76. He has played just 48 games since and has been traded twice.Â

Giants To Acquire Joey Wiemer
The Giants acquired outfielder Joey Wiemer from the Marlins in exchange for cash, per the team. Miami designated the former top prospect for assignment earlier in the week when setting its roster ahead of the deadline to protect players from the Rule 5 Draft. San Francisco designated catcher Andrew Knizner for assignment in a corresponding roster move.
Now 26 years old, Wiemer was the Brewersâ fourth-round pick in 2020. He appeared on the back end of MLB.comâs top-100 prospect list in both 2022 and 2023 but has seen his stock dwindle since that time. Milwaukee flipped him to the Reds alongside Jakob Junis in the 2024 Frankie Montas trade, and Cincinnati subsequently dealt him to Kansas City with Jonathan India in exchange for right-hander Brady Singer. The Marlins scooped him up off waivers in early August, shortly following this yearâs trade deadline.
