Jameis Winston wants to stay, set to be Giants' backup next season

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — As Cam Skattebo lay on the ground with an open fracture to his right ankle and leg during the New York Giants' matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 8, fellow rookie and QB Jaxson Dart began to get emotional. The two have become close in their short time since being drafted.

Right then, veteran quarterback Jameis Winston came and put his arm around Dart, the starter, as they stood on the field at Lincoln Financial. Winston wanted to make sure the young quarterback kept his composure. Dart had to; the game was set to resume moments later.

Jaxson Dart will likely convince New York Giants front office to keep $8 million veteran for next season

New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart has given the team hope that the franchise has found its first glimmer of sustainable hope under center in the post-Eli Manning era. That could lead to franchise player treatment this offseason.

If that ends up being the case, then 31-year-old backup quarterback Jameis Winston can expect to stick with the franchise in 2026 because of Dart’s support, according to Pro Football Talk’s Michael David Smith.

“Realistically, it’s hard to imagine the 31-year-old Winston getting an opportunity to start again unless a quarterback ahead of him on the depth chart gets injured. But Dart and Giants head coach Brian Daboll have both said Winston has been an important presence in the quarterbacks’ room, and so he’ll likely remain with the Giants, backing Dart up in 2026,” Smith wrote.

Giants Did Not Receive Trade Calls For QB Jameis Winston

With the trade deadline having come and gone, it is now known only one quarterback move (Joe Flacco to the Bengals) occurred. That leaves Jameis Winston in place to continue serving as the Giants’ third-string passer.

The free agent addition has spent 2025 as New York’s emergency No. 3 quarterback. That situation did not change when Jaxson Dart took over starting duties from Russell Wilson. After the switch, many expected at least one of Wilson or Winston to be dealt. Instead, both are still in the fold and Winston (under contract through 2026) remains in the team’s plans beyond the second half of the current campaign.
